The Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA), in partnership with EConsult Botswana, will host a Development Policy Seminar under the theme: “Natural Resources and the Middle-Income Trap: Lessons for Botswana’s Second Transformation.”
The seminar will provide a platform for high-level dialogue on Botswana’s policy priorities, fiscal stance, and the implications of these factors for the country’s economic transformation and long-term development aspirations.
This seminar takes place at a pivotal moment in Botswana’s development trajectory. The contribution of diamonds to GDP has declined substantially—from over 50% in the late 1980s to approximately 10% by 2024—highlighting the urgency for the country to strengthen new productive capacities, support lagging sectors, and diversify revenue sources in the context of long-term fiscal pressures.
